TUESDAY 8th APRIL
It's been a lovely sunny day-a bit windy but very warm. After a breakfast of cereal, croissants and choc au pain, we set off on the coach at 9am and headed north to the coast and Le Mont St Michel.
We walked up and up and up-the views were fabulous and our Chateau Beaumont guide, Tom, told us lots of gory details of the history of the abbey and the surrounding quick sand beaches!
The streets are very quaint with lots of twists and turns and old fashioned shops. We even saw the original 'Diagon Alley' which inspired the writer of Harry Potter.
In total we walked up 207 steps to the very top of the Mont where there is a huge abbey. As we walked down we bought presents for our families and then at the bottom, the best bit of all-huge ice creams!
After a picnic lunch of baguettes, crisps and fruit......
we got back onto the coach and headed for Fougere castle, the oldest and largest medieval castle in France.
We learned lots about the history of France and how medieval soldiers defended their castles. There were also lots of interesting tips for anyone who wanted to attack the castle including poisoning the water in the wells.
We tried out the stone coffin reserved for the soldiers killed when the castle was attacked-sorry Mrs Snaith!
There were hundreds of stairs to climb up several tall towers.
but the view from the top across the valley was super.
The boys tried out some medieval jousting.......erm....not boxing boys!!!
But Robert won! Sorry Leo's Mum!! Mind you Thomas seems quite happy!
Team Chopwell!!
We travelled back to the Chateau for an evening meal of chicken and pommes frites with creme brulee for pudding. The evening activity was hilarious-Scrap Heap Challenge with an egg!!! We had to make a device from recycled materials to protect an egg when it was thrown from a third floor window of the Chateau!!
Everyone watched as the eggs were launched from on height........and Chopwell.......lost! Both of our eggs smashed on impact! After our chocolat chaud we all went off to bed exhausted but very happy!!
Lovely to see smiles Shay xx
